Our commitment

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy aspires to be a diverse and inclusive community of people to accelerate new thinking and ideas in education, research, and practice that improve human health worldwide.

We strive towards this vision through our school values of welcoming, equity, commitment, accountability, respect, and excellence (WE CARE). Members of our school community are responsible for promoting a culture of inclusion and belonging while appreciating and valuing others to ensure equitable opportunities for all.

This tool is designed to promote a culture of inclusion and belonging in our School community by identifying areas for improvement and growth. The purpose of this tool is not to be punitive or intervene, but rather to capture instances that contradict the school’s mission and values.

What will this tool do?

  • Provide evidence to develop strategies for addressing trends and patterns
  • Identify gaps in our commitment to being a diverse and inclusive community of people
  • Streamline educational opportunities to reduce instances that contradict our school’s values

What will this tool not do?

  • Provide interventions
  • Conduct investigations
  • Constitute a formal report

All submissions in the Community Culture and Climate Improvement Tool are reviewed by responsible employees in Human Resources that are required to share any information on protected status with the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office (EOC). This includes reports of discrimination and harassment based on age, color, disability, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex (including gender, gender expression, or gender identity), sexual orientation, and veteran status (including reports of sexual assault, sexual violence, interpersonal violence, and stalking). Please note that any information submitted via this tool may be subject to a public records request per North Carolina law.

What should be submitted in this tool?

This tool can be used to submit incidents that are culturally insensitive in nature and/or exhibit explicit bias, implicit bias, microaggressions, stereotypes, etc. The submission form will request information about how, when, and where the incident occurred.

What happens after a submission is made?

The submissions in this tool will be de-identified and aggregated on a regular basis by Human Resources, after which the submissions record will be cleared. The aggregated information will only be used in generalized, non-identifiable ways to direct educational efforts by the Office of Organizational Diversity and Inclusion. Recommendations will be provided to school leadership to implement further education and training efforts as applicable.

Where should I submit a formal report or incidents that may need intervention?

Any formal reports about employees not related to discrimination or harassment can be directed to the ESOP HR team, or the Office of Human Resources Employee and Management Relations team. Submissions that may require intervention or additional measures to be taken should not be submitted via this tool. If you would like to make a report about specific incidences of discrimination or harassment, including sexual misconduct/harassment/violence, please file a report with the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office (EOC). The policy on prohibited discrimination, harassment, and related misconduct can be found here. If the incident pertains to a student and requires intervention, please submit a referral through the Eshelman Care Team in the Office of Student Affairs.
